Installing new components in Joomla

Installing a new component in Joomla is as easy as 1 2 3.

1.    Download the component / module / mambot  / plugin or template of your choice. It should come in a ZIP file. Don't even unzip it.

2.    Login to your Joomla administration panel and go to Installers and choose the type of file your are installing.

3.    Click on browse and select the zipfile you downloaded earlier. Hit 'Upload and Install' to start the installation process ...

Your web browser will now upload the file to the web server, where Joomla will take care of unzipping the file and placing everything in the correct location.

Now you will often be presented with some final release notes or tips from the developer on configuring this particular component. Click the continue button when you have finished reading it.

Now the item is installed, but you will still have to configure and publish it. This generaly works the same for components, mambots and modules. Templates just have to be assigned to either the complete site or just a set of pages on your site.

For components :

Go to components / the name of the component you installed

Now you can configure any options or parameters

Some components publish themselves into your menu, like Remository, but for most other components you will have to add a menu entry for the component to show up on your site. You can add this by going to : menu / main menu / new / component / select the new component and click next. Give it a name as it should appear in your menu and hit save to save the new menu entry. For more details, read our guide on Joomla menus.

For modules :

Go to modules / site modules and click the name of the module you installed

Now you can configure any options or parameters

Make sure to select the radio button YES for 'PUBLISHED' to actually publish the module

Select the module position to place the module on a particular location of your sites' template

Click save to save the changes and publish the module

For mambots / plugins :

Go to mambots / site mambots and click the name of the mambot you installed

Now you can configure any options or parameters

Make sure to select the radio button YES for 'PUBLISHED' to actually publish the mambot

Click save to save the changes and publish the mambot

For templates :

Go to site / templates / site templates

Click the radio button next to the template you want to activate

Click on the button DEFAULT to make this the new default template for your site

You can also assign a particular template to certain areas of your site by clicking on assign and choosing the areas where you want the Joomla template applied.
