Guide to FTP clients on Windows and Mac OS XPre-requirements : FTP Login information (You should get this from your webhost / ISP) FTP stand for File Transfer Protocol. And that's exactly what we use it for with Joomla. We use it to transfer the files for Joomla itself to do the initial installation, but often as well later on to do small edits in the code or to upload larger files. For the purpose of this guide, we will describe 2 different FTP software programs. One for Windows users (FlashFXP) and one for Apple Mac OS X users (CyberDuck).
FlashFXP is shareware, you can download it here and if you like it after trying it for some time you can decide to buy a licence. If you don't buy a license, there will be a nag / delay screen during startup of the program. Other than that you will be able to use the software as normal. How to connect to a server with FlashFXP 1. Download and install FlashFXP. (www.flashfxp.com) 2. Start FlashFXP from the start menu or another shortcut. 3. Hit F4 on your keyboard to open the site manager In the site manager you can enter 'bookmarks' for all the sites you need to login to. Each site consists of 3 pieces of information, the host name or IP address, the username and the password. 4. Click on 'new site' and enter the required login information (IP, USER, PASS). 5. Click on 'connect' to connect to the site. The login information will be saved into the site manager for future use. 6. You are now connected and ready to transfer files. Transferring files in FlashFXP can be done in various ways. You can drag and drop files between the left and right windows, or directly to or from Windows explorer. You can right click files to rename them, delete them or edit them using a text editor.
Cyberduck is a free FTP utility for Mac OS Tiger and Leopard. It's completely Cocoa based, you can drag and drop files from anywhere on your Mac. Cyberduck is free software, free as in beer and air. How to install Cyberduck FTP for Mac : 1. Download the Cyberduck DMG install file 2. Open the DMG file if your browser didn't open it already by double clicking it. 3. In the finder you will see a new icon for the DMG file you just mounted. Click it to see the contents. 4. You will see a large Cyberduck icon. You can just drag it to your applications folder and drop it there to install the software. How to connect to a server with Cyberduck FTP : 1. Open Cyberduck FTP from your Applications folder. 2. If you don't have a bookmark panel on the left, click on the bookmark icon to open it 3. Click on the + symbol at the bottom of the bookmark panel to add a server to your Cyberduck bookmarks 4. A new window will open where you must enter a nickname for the server, the IP address (or hostname) of the server you want to connect to, and the username to login (Which you should have gotten from your webhost). You will be prompted for the password later. 5. Close the window and double click the entry in the bookmarks to connect to the server. You will then be prompted for the password. You can also select to have this information saved to your 'keychain' for future use. 6. You are now connected and ready to transfer files. Transferring files in Cyberduck FTP can be done in various ways. You can drag and drop files directly to or from the finder. You can control click (or right click if you have a 2 button mouse) files to rename them, delete them or edit them using a text editor. If you have a text editor like BBedit, you can configure this in the Cyberduck preferences so you can use it to edit html / php code.
